At a special luncheon on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, Holy Cross Hospital honored Doctors’ Day by celebrating our physicians who provide quality and compassionate health care to the community.

Doctors' Day is a time to reflect on the vital role physicians play in helping and supporting the overall health of our community," said Blair Eig, MD, chief medical officer, Holy Cross Health. “Holy Cross Hospital couldn’t provide quality care to its patients without the commitment of our physicians. And for that we are grateful.”

Being a physician takes a special kind of person. On Doctors’ Day, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to all of the physicians of Holy Cross Hospital who provide care to their patients each and every day,” said Judith Rogers, president, Holy Cross Hospital. “This year, for the second time in a row, our physicians helped us earn The Joint Commission’s Top Performer Award for providing the highest quality of care to our patients. We take Doctors’ Day as an opportunity to thank our physicians for being part of our medical staff, advocates for our patients, and their continued commitment to our mission.”

The first Doctor's Day was observed on March 30, 1933, when Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Charles B. Almond, MD, decided to set aside a day to honor physicians. The date of March 30 was chosen because it marks the date that Crawford W. Long, MD, administered the first anesthetic for surgery on March 30, 1842. In 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed a resolution designating March 30 as National Doctors' Day.
