(Silver Spring, Maryland) – The Joint Commission has just announced this year’s Top Performers on Key Quality Measures, and Holy Cross Hospital is the only hospital in Maryland and in the Greater Washington, D.C., area to achieve this recognition for the second year in a row.

In The Joint Commission’s annual report, Improving America’s Hospitals: The Joint Commission Annual Report on Quality and Safety 2012, the 2011 Top Performers on Key Quality Measures list recognizes 620 hospitals nationwide that attained excellence in at least one accountability measure of performance. These accountability measures of evidence-based care processes are closely linked to positive patient outcomes.

For the second consecutive year, Holy Cross Hospital was recognized on four adult measures – heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care – and is one of only 88 hospitals nationwide to be recognized as a Top Performer for these four adult measures in both 2010 and 2011.

Kevin J. Sexton, president and CEO, says this consistent success is a result of hospital wide initiatives and staff dedication. “This recognition ultimately demonstrates our ongoing commitment to delivering high quality patient care and the individual commitment by our staff to keep our patients safe.”

Together with this year’s 2012 Excellence Award for Quality Improvement from the Delmarva Foundation for Medical Care and the hospitals success in reducing potentially preventable complications, Holy Cross Hospital continues to be recognized for real improvements in numerous measurements of quality.

Holy Cross Hospital is one of the largest hospitals in the state of Maryland with more than 30,000 annual admissions. Holy Cross Hospital is a faith-based, mission-driven teaching hospital serving the residents of Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties. The hospital is a member of Trinity Health of Novi, Michigan, one of the nation’s largest Catholic healthcare systems.
