Types of Minimally Invasive Surgery

At Holy Cross Hospital and Holy Cross Germantown Hospital, our surgeons utilize the most advanced, minimally invasive surgical techniques for optimal outcomes including:

Robotic-Assisted Surgery
Utilizing the da Vinci Robotic System and the newest, most advanced robot, the da Vinci Xi, our surgeons perform a wide variety of minimally invasive surgeries. The robotic system equips surgeons with magnification and enhanced 3D visualization of the surgical field as well as control of robotic arms that provide a range of motion greater than the human hand for superior surgical precision.

Laparoscopy
This minimally invasive procedure utilizes an instrument called a laparoscope, a long, thin tube with a high-resolution camera and a light at the tip that is inserted into a small incision in the abdomen to view internal organs, tissues, and surrounding structures. The tiny camera sends images to a monitor allowing the surgeon to visualize the abdominal cavity and pelvic area for abnormalities. Laparoscopy is often used as a diagnostic procedure for conditions affecting the abdomen and pelvis, including gynecologic conditions in women.

Endoscopy
Endoscopic surgery involves the use of an endoscope, a flexible tube with a small camera attached at the end. This instrument is inserted through a small incision, or through a natural opening in the body such as the mouth, to allow the surgeon to view internal organs, vessels, and tissues without making a large incision. Special instruments can also be attached to the endoscope to operate on affected areas of the body without the need for open surgery.

Benefits of Minimally Invasive Surgery

Minimally invasive surgical procedures reduce the trauma often associated with more traditional, open surgeries. In many cases, our specially trained surgeons can perform the same surgery through very small incisions, using tiny instruments and powerful surgical cameras that visually guide the surgeon throughout the procedure with great precision. Benefits to you of minimally invasive surgery include:

  • Small incisions and less scarring
  • Reduced blood loss during surgery
  • Less post-operative pain
  • Fewer post-surgical complications
  • Quicker recovery and return to normal activities of daily life
  • Less overall trauma to the body
