Dawn Johnson Leonard, MD

Dr. Dawn Johnson Leonard is a board-certified general surgeon and a fellowship-trained breast surgical oncologist. She is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Leonard completed her medical school and general surgery training at Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC and a fellowship in breast surgical oncology at Washington Hospital Center.

In January 2006, she started her career in Frederick, Maryland as the first medical director of Coordinated Breast Services for Frederick Memorial Hospital and was the founder of Leonard Surgical Care Associates, LLC a surgical practice dedicated to the treatment of benign and malignant breast disease. Since then, she has served as the Medical Director of Breast Care and Chief of Breast Surgery, at several health care institutions including LifeBridgeHealth, MedStar Health and ChrisitianaCare, with a focus on program building, innovation and excellence. She has maintained an active leadership role serving on multiple hospital committees while promoting, expanding and maintaining breast health services in the communities she serves.

After 4 years as the Chief of Breast Surgery at Christiana Care, the predominant health care system in Deleware, she recently returned home to Montgomery County Maryland to follow her calling – creating a new breast care program for Holy Cross Health at the Holy Cross Health Cancer Center.

She has won numerous awards bestowed by her peers including Physician of the Year and has been a “Top Doc” in each community she has practiced. She remains steadfast in her service work providing free breast health and education resulting in multiple additional state and local commendations and awards.

Most importantly, Dr. Leonard is a proud Montgomery County Maryland native, the wife of a supportive husband, the mother of three amazing young adults and two naughty but lovable dogs with a full and happy family life.
