Holy Cross Hospital Aneurysm Specialists Provide Progressive Treatment for Brain Aneurysm

At Holy Cross Hospital, a multidisciplinary care team of some of the most experienced neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists and neurologists in the Washington, DC and Maryland region work together to plan and implement the best possible—and least invasive—treatment for patients with brain aneurysm.

The hospital is one of just a few medical centers in the Washington, DC area that offer the most sophisticated minimally invasive therapies. Its advanced interventional neuroradiology program, under the direction of Asante Dickson, MD, features sophisticated diagnostic neuroradiology tools and advanced treatment techniques in interventional radiology, which are allowing patients to avoid higher risk, open surgeries.

What is a Brain Aneurysm?

A brain aneurysm is a weak spot in a blood vessel in the brain. Over time, pressure from the blood moving through the vessel causes the weak area to swell and bulge outward.

Sometimes the pressure in the vessel can cause the weakened area of the vessel to tear, allowing blood to spill out into the space around the brain. This is called a ruptured aneurysm, and it requires immediate surgical treatment.

Because of advanced imaging tools, more and more patients at Holy Cross Hospital are having their aneurysm diagnosed early, before they rupture, or grow larger and more difficult to treat. Un-ruptured brain aneurysm treatment focuses on preventing rupture using several less invasive surgical techniques.
