(Silver Spring, Maryland) – Holy Cross Hospital held its eighth annual Women’s Health Event on Saturday May 19, 2012 and saw a nearly 30 percent increase in attendance over the previous year. Ann Burke, MD, Medical Director, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Holy Cross Hospital says that one of the reasons for the event’s growing success is the strategy of reaching out specifically to women 40 and older. “It is an increasing demographic and they are very active and involved in their healthcare decisions.”
For six years, the event was held at the hospital’s Senior Source location but had to be moved to the larger Holy Cross Hospital Professional and Community Education Center to accommodate the growing crowd. Wendy Friar, Vice President, Community Health, Holy Cross Hospital says that the event's popularity reflects a changing attitude about taking responsibility for one’s own health. “Women are into empowerment and the mindset is, 'now, I know I need to do it but I need to know how.'”
The theme of the Women’s Event 2012 was Make the Mind, Body and Spirit Connection and it featured fitness and holistic food prep demonstrations along with breakout sessions on joint health, healthy aging, breast cancer and incontinence. Medical professionals were on hand to provide health screenings for cholesterol and blood pressure.
The keynote speaker was Florence Williams, an award-winning science journalist and author of the newly published book, “Breasts: A Natural and Unnatural History.” Williams spoke to the audience about the evolution of breasts and the challenges to breast health in the modern world.
Jerri Scarzella served as Mistress of Ceremonies and Sarah McKechnie, Manager, Community Fitness at Holy Cross Hospital, got the event off to a fit start sharing exercises to help the audience relax and prepare for a day of learning.
