Coming to Work for Holy Cross Hospital Was Like Heaven

I started work at Holy Cross Hospital on November 6, 1962, before the hospital even opened. I lived in Baltimore at the time and had gone to Silver Spring to check out the new hospital. While I was there I inquired about work and was hired on the spot as a boiler operator. Several of us reported to work before the hospital opened on January 10, 1963, so we could help unload trucks full of beds and furniture.

Prior to joining Holy Cross Hospital, I was working for a hospital in Baltimore City. They were burning coal in the furnaces for heat and it was a very dirty job. Holy Cross Hospital was using oil in their furnaces and it was much easier and cleaner to work with. The change from working with coal to oil was like heaven!

Holy Cross Hospital has changed so much over the years. It seems as though almost everything has moved and gotten larger. Now the hospital is getting ready to expand again, BIG TIME. It’s really going to be something with an escalator in the lobby that goes to a new patient tower!

It has been very interesting to watch the hospital grow and thrive over the years. I am glad to have been around to see it.
