Pediatric Patient Becomes Physician

In 1978, when I was 4-years-old, I was admitted to Holy Cross Hospital for epiglottitis, which is a life-threatening infection in the lower part of the throat. I couldn’t swallow and I had a hard time breathing.

I remember when the doctors put a mask over my face to put me to sleep so they could intubate me. I spent about a week on the pediatrics floor receiving IV antibiotics.

Now, 34 years later, I work at Holy Cross Hospital as a pediatric emergency room physician.
