(Silver Spring, MD) Today, the Maryland Health Care Commission gave final unanimous approval of Holy Cross Hospital's plans to build a new hospital in Germantown and reissued its Certificate of Need. In conjunction with this final approval, Holy Cross Hospital officials announced the name of the new hospital.
In recommending approval of the new hospital, Marilyn Moon, PhD, Chair of the Maryland Health Care Commission, noted that “Holy Cross Hospital has a strong record in providing quality care, access to care for the indigent, broad community benefits, and efficient and effective management of its hospital operations.”
Kevin J. Sexton, president and CEO of Holy Cross Hospital said, “We are pleased with the reaffirmation of our plans to expand health care access in upper Montgomery County and will proceed immediately with construction of the new hospital, which will be named Holy Cross Germantown Hospital.”
The name Holy Cross Germantown Hospital balances two distinct requests that emerged from research Holy Cross conducted to help determine the name of the new hospital. One request relates to credibility and one is clearly practical. The research found that Montgomery County residents trust Holy Cross to be an innovative health care leader dedicated to the community, and they want the new hospital to reflect that important Holy Cross connection. Residents also want the new hospital to have its own identity, while being clear about where it will be located. Having both Holy Cross and Germantown in the name allows us to reflect our heritage and respond to both requests.
Holy Cross Germantown Hospital will open in the summer of 2014, one year after Holy Cross Hospital celebrates its 50th anniversary of serving the community. Following the addition of its third primary care health center for uninsured and vulnerable adults this year in Aspen Hill, this expansion of hospital services will enable residents to obtain health care closer to home. Its unique location as anchor of the Montgomery College Life Sciences Park in Germantown will help train the next generation of health care workers.
Sexton said, “The extension of the health care ministry of Holy Cross is a fitting tribute to the Sisters of the Holy Cross – who established our hospital nearly 50 years ago – and to the many people of Holy Cross who work so hard each and every day to help Holy Cross earn the confidence of the State of Maryland, reflected in this positive decision, and the trust of our community.”
Holy Cross Hospital is one of the largest hospitals in Maryland. Founded nearly 50 years ago, today Holy Cross Hospital is a 455-bed, not-for-profit teaching hospital serving Montgomery and Prince George's counties and caring for more than 188,000 patients each year. The hospital is a member of Trinity Health of Novi, Mich., one of the largest health systems in the country.
