Holy Cross Health of Silver Spring, Maryland, is now the only health system in the region to offer private rooms to all patients. Holy Cross Germantown Hospital opened in October 2014 with all private rooms and with the November 1 opening of the new south building on the Kevin J. Sexton Campus of Holy Cross Health, Holy Cross Hospital can now provide a private room to every patient admitted. [View photos]

"Our expansion, by providing all private rooms, will permit us to honor the unique care needs of each individual we serve as we safeguard their privacy," said Judith Rogers, president of Holy Cross Hospital. "Our expansion will evidence our mission in a way that will be very personal to each patient we care for and will not only provide a safe and comfortable environment for our patients but for their families as well. Our staff will work in a state of the art healing environment that optimizes their ability to deliver services to the patients they care for towards preferred, positive clinical outcomes."

The seven-story patient care building adds 232,000 square feet of space and 150 private rooms in critical care, intermediate care and medical-surgery units. The unique design of the building, with large colored glass windows, follows the curve of the beltway and has already become a regional landmark.

"Today represents the final piece in the physical transformation of Holy Cross Hospital," said Kevin J. Sexton, president and CEO of Holy Cross Health. "It's also the final piece of the board of directors' plan for Holy Cross Health that was developed back in 2008, and that plan has led to the brand-new beautiful Holy Cross Germantown Hospital that serves the needs of the upcounty. It includes a total of four health centers that provide exceptional, accessible healthcare for the uninsured of our county and an additional OB-GYN center for the same purpose, and culminates with the opening of the Holy Cross Hospital South Building. We're proud of all of these projects and what they give us the capability to do for our community. But, as we take pride in this wonderful new capacity, I think it's especially critical we take stock of the amazing work that is done every day by the doctors, nurses, skilled medical staff, management and staff of Holy Cross."

One hundred forty-six (146) patients were moved into the 150-bed new building on opening day. Hospital executives, volunteers, transportation staff, nurses and physicians were on hand to assure that patients who were currently sharing rooms made the successful transition to their new private rooms.
