The Holy Cross Hospital South Building Wins Design Excellence Award
(Silver Spring, Md.) — The Holy Cross Hospital South Building has won a 2017 Design Excellence Award from the Montgomery County Planning Department, part of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission. Holy Cross Hospital's seven-story patient care building took the top honor in the "Building and Sites" category. The award honors both buildings and landscapes in Montgomery County that are currently in use and less than 10 years old.
Opened on Nov. 1, 2015, the Holy Cross Hospital South Building added 150 private patient rooms in critical care, intermediate care and medical-surgical units, allowing Holy Cross Hospital to join Holy Cross Germantown Hospital as the only area hospitals to offer private rooms to all patients. The building represents Holy Cross Hospital's largest expansion in more than 50 years, adding 232,000 square feet and bringing the latest technology, privacy and comfort to all patients. The building was designed by SmithGroupJJR of Washington, D.C.
"We are honored to win this award in honor of the building's beauty and functionality," said Louis Damiano, MD, president, Holy Cross Hospital. "We see the positive impact that providing care in this setting has on peoples' lives every day and it is great to step back and celebrate its incredible design."
The Design Excellence Award jury praised the South Building for its architectural form, orchestrated entrance procession, organization of rooms, illuminated corner tower and how it provides a new landmark for travelers on the Capital Beltway.
The jurors stated, “The designers have given the community a tower of light that lets us know the hospital is there for us day and night. It is an exemplary addition to our community.”
