Comprehensive Epilepsy Center Offers Specialized Diagnosis and Treatment
Gregory Mathews, MD |
Holy Cross Hospital's Epilepsy Center offers a comprehensive diagnostic and treatment service for patients with seizure disorders that is among the region's most sophisticated - unique for a community hospital.
The center combines the expertise of epileptologists, a dedicated Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and surgical treatment options to provide the best possible outcomes - and sometimes a cure - for patients.
Expert epileptologists lead the center's care team. These are neurologists with advanced epilepsy training and experience, who work with other team members to evaluate patients, diagnose epilepsy and develop individualized and comprehensive treatment plans.
Epilepsy Monitoring Unit
The Epilepsy Monitoring Unit is a dedicated facility equipped with state-of-the-art technology to help seizure experts monitor and evaluate patients effectively. The epilepsy team uses a number of tools to monitor patients' seizure activity and examine the brain, including EEG, PET scan and MRI. These tools provide physicians with critical information that can either rule out or diagnose epilepsy or other types of seizure disorders.
Therapy Options
Treatment for epilepsy may include non-surgical solutions, such as medications, MRI laser ablation LITT therapy, diet or implantation of devices used to control seizures. Surgical treatment will be the best choice for some patients - and the hospital's highly experienced neurosurgical team works collaboratively with epileptologists to evaluate patients, and perform procedures, when appropriate.
Each patient's care plan also addresses emotional and social issues and puts a special emphasis on helping patients learn to live full and independent lives despite their illness.
