The comprehensive Cancer Center, opened its’ doors to patients on January 1, 2023, and is currently in Phase 2 of expansion. An investment in the health of our community, bringing together an optimal mix of medical, radiation, and surgical oncology along with rehabilitation; palliative care; genetic counseling; support groups; and health and wellness programs that will address early cancer detection, healthy diet and exercise. Each year, approximately 10,000 babies are born at Holy Cross Hospital and Holy Cross Germantown Hospital. Holy Cross Hospital’s NICU cares for newborns with complex medical issues in collaboration with Holy Cross Germantown Hospital’s Neonatal Unit. Holy Cross Health offers services that begin at the start of pregnancy with prenatal care and continue to post-birth care for mother and newborn. This fund addresses barriers to good health for vulnerable members of our community. For patients who seek health care services at the Holy Cross Health Centers, we pay for needs that would otherwise go unmet including specialty care, medications and medical devices. We help patients address social needs by offering a social work team to help navigate resources as well as direct support for emergency needs such as food, housing and transportation. We work with local partners in the communities surrounding the Holy Cross Health Centers to address their health priorities. The honorable men and women of the United States Armed Forces and their families have answered our country’s call to serve with dedication, courage and sacrifice. We compassionately care for more newborns with complex medical issues than any other hospital in Maryland or the District of Columbia. This fund is for use at the Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring. At Holy Cross Hospital, we have always believed in providing more than just medical care to our patients and their families. A newborn baby’s admission to the NICU can be very stressful for the baby’s family, especially if the hospitalization is lengthy.

Our NICU staff prides itself on being an extended family by providing each baby’s family with support and encouragement. Our most financially vulnerable families, however, have needs that extend beyond emotional support, both while their babies are in the NICU and when they prepare to bring them home.

The Ryan Donald Basile Memorial Fund for NICU Families in Need has been established to meet these needs. The Fund honors the memory of the son of one of the NICU’s longest-serving medical providers. Ryan, who tragically passed away on March 29, 2020, at the age of 25, was the son of Susan Basile, a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner who has cared for babies and their families at Holy Cross for more than 30 years. Susan’s medical skills and dedication to her patients and their families are exceptional. Establishing this Fund in her son’s memory is a fitting tribute to her many contributions to the well-being of NICU families over the years.

The Fund is providing financial support to families in need of food, housing, childcare, and transportation while their infants are in the NICU. The Fund is also providing items such as formula, bottles, clothing, and car seats that are needed to prepare for their babies’ arrival home.
