Silver Spring, MD – Healthgrades, a leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals, recently recognized Holy Cross Hospital as one of America's 100 Best Hospitals for Critical Care™. Additionally, Holy Cross Hospital was a recipient of the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™ in 2017 and 2018, placing it among the top 5 percent of hospitals in the nation. These achievements were identified as part of Healthgrades ongoing studies of the data and findings that can help both consumers and providers make informed health care decisions.

"I am pleased that Holy Cross Hospital has been recognized for superior performance in delivering safe, comprehensive and consistent quality care," said Louis Damiano, MD, president, Holy Cross Hospital. "We are committed to consistently delivering excellent care for our patients, while upholding our mission to be the most trusted provider of healthcare services."

Top 5 Percent of Hospitals in the Nation for Quality

Last year, Holy Cross Hospital was one of only nine hospitals in the state of Maryland, and the only hospital in Montgomery County, Prince George's County and the District of Columbia to receive the 2018 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence. The 250 recipients nationwide of this award stand out among the rest for overall clinical excellence across a broad spectrum of care. According to Healthgrades, during the 2018 study period (2014-2016), these hospitals had the lowest risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates across at least 21 of 32 common conditions and procedures.

One of America's 100 Best Hospitals for Critical Care™

The America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Critical Care™ award is based on the performance in Diabetic Emergencies, Pulmonary Embolism, Respiratory Failure and Sepsis. To be considered for an award in this specialty area, a hospital must be evaluated in at least three of the four conditions. The findings released in the Healthgrades 2019 Report to the Nation revealed that hospitals receiving the America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Critical Care Award have, on average, a 30 percent lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award. Holy Cross is the only hospital in Montgomery County to be named one of America’s 100 Best Hospital in Critical Care.

Holy Cross Hospital was also recognized for the following clinical achievements:

  • Critical Care Excellence Award™ for two consecutive years (2018-2019)
  • Five-Star for Treatment of Sepsis for thirteen consecutive years (2007-2019)
  • Five-Star for Treatment of Respiratory Failure for two consecutive years (2018-2019)
  • Five-Star for Treatment of Pulmonary Embolism in 2019
