Kaiser Permanent and Holy Cross Health launch Unique joint Residency Program

(Rockville, Md.) — Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States is excited to announce the launch of its first-ever Internal Medicine Residency Program with Holy Cross Health. Just accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, the program is a partnership with Holy Cross Hospital. Residents will be trained in and around Washington, D.C., and will provide rotations in outpatient, inpatient, critical care, and emergency medicine settings, as well as affiliated clinics for the underserved.

“Our physicians are recognized as national leaders for providing the highest-quality care. We are thrilled to train the next generation of doctors on how to best prevent and treat disease,” said Richard McCarthy, MD, associate executive director for the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group, the region’s largest integrated, private group practice that exclusively serves Kaiser Permanente members. “We carefully hire, train and equip Permanente physicians to provide care in a way that cannot be replicated in fee-for-service medicine, and as a result, our patients are healthier, and our physicians are more satisfied. Our residency program will be one-of-a-kind in the Mid-Atlantic.”

During their residency, participants in the program will be taught and mentored by world-class physicians at both the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group and Holy Cross. Upon completion of the program, residents will be eligible to join the highly selective Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group.

"Holy Cross Health is very excited to continue our partnership with Kaiser Permanente through this innovative new internal medicine residency program. Holy Cross' vibrant hospital services make it an ideal partner for the hospital-based portion of the clinical training necessary for the residents. The program will allow us to jointly train the next generation of primary care physicians for our community," said Blair Eig, MD, chief medical officer, Holy Cross Health. “This residency program will offer future health care leaders the opportunity to learn our model of award-winning, high-quality care,” said Kim Horn, president of Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States. “As a result, more qualified physicians will practice excellent medical care in our region and may become part of our health system—one whose health plans are rated among the top one percent in the nation by the National Committee for Quality Assurance.”

With the Internal Medicine Residency Program officially starting in July of 2020, candidates for Kaiser Permanente’s first class of residents will begin applying this summer and interviews will take place in the fall. Prospective residents and those interested in learning more about the program may visit residency-mas.kaiserpermanente.org or contact Marc John D.
