Weight Loss Surgery Options
Our surgeons specialize in minimally invasive robotic and laparoscopic surgery, which means they make very small incisions and use specialized instruments to perform surgery. Almost all patients qualify for this type of minimally invasive weight-loss surgery. This approach results in less pain, a shorter recovery, and fewer complications for our patients than traditional surgery with larger incisions.
Weight Loss Surgery Procedures
The right surgical treatment for you will be determined with your physician. Holy Cross Hospital and Holy Cross Germantown Hospital are equipped to support the following weight loss surgeries:
- Sleeve gastrectomy - This surgery reduces the size of the stomach, creating a small pouch that significantly reduces the volume of food that can be consumed, while still allowing the stomach to function normally.
- Duodenal switch – This surgery is designed to treat people who have diabetes and/or severe obesity. It combines a sleeve gastrectomy with an intestinal bypass.
- Roux-en-Y gastric bypass - This surgery makes the stomach smaller and allows food to bypass part of the small intestine, which in turn has a profound effect on diabetes resolution.
- Bariatric revision surgery – This is a procedure that corrects or improves a prior weight loss surgery. Most bariatric surgeries do not require a revision procedure; however, in some cases, patients find that a prior procedure may need a “tune-up,” just like a vehicle, to help keep it functioning properly.
Excess Skin Removal and Body Contouring
Weight loss surgery patients may quickly lose a large amount of weight after surgery. For about half of the patients, the rapid weight loss results in the excess abdominal skin. These patients may be candidates for skin removal or body contouring plastic surgery to remove the extra skin. Depending on unique patient needs, skin removal surgery may be performed by a bariatric surgeon, or a plastic surgeon.
