General Surgery for Overweight and Obese Patients
Our bariatric surgeons are accustomed to operating on overweight and obese patients, and are uniquely situated to perform general abdominal surgery on these patients, including gallbladder removal and repairing hiatal or abdominal wall hernias. Our anesthesiologists also have experience with the complex airway issues associated with obesity. Our operating rooms have special tables and instruments to safely and comfortably care for overweight and obese patients.
Obesity can make surgery more challenging. Excess weight can put you at risk for certain side effects and complications. These can result from the surgery itself, or from the anesthesia you may need during your surgery. You may also have medical conditions that are caused or made worse by the extra weight, and they can increase your risk during surgery. For example, your blood pressure may be higher than normal. You may have diabetes or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). It is important to select a surgeon and hospital with the expertise and experience to safely care for you.
