Financial Assistance/Insurance
Maryland Health Connection
Enrollment in qualified health plans through Maryland Health Connection is available during open enrollment season. However, you can enroll any time of year if you’re eligible for Medicaid or if you’ve recently had certain qualifying life events, like getting married or turning 26.
There are three ways to enroll:
- Online: marylandhealthconnection.gov
- By Phone: 1-855-642-8572 (TTY: 1-855-642-8573)
- In-Person at an Enrollment Center: View Montgomery County locations | View Prince George's County locations.
To qualify for Medicaid you must meet the following:
- Be a resident of Maryland
- Be a U.S. citizen or meet immigration requirements
- Meet income limits
- Meet asset requirements (for those applying for long-term care)
- Meet medical requirements (for those applying for long-term care and other special programs)

Holy Cross Health Financial Assistance Program
Holy Cross Health's financial assistance program offers free or discounted services to patients who qualify. Applications and information are available online or through the financial counselors, cashiers and inpatient registration areas at Holy Cross Hospital and Holy Cross Germantown Hospital. Maryland Breast and Cervical Cancer Program
Maryland’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program (BCCP) provides breast and cervical cancer screening, diagnosis, and patient navigation services to women across the state.
To apply you will need the following:
- Proof of Maryland residency
- Present proof of eligible medical condition
- Insurance information if applicable
- Proof of income

Cancer Insurance Checklist

- American Cancer Society: Patients can apply for grants by contacting the American Cancer Society's 24-hour help-line, 1-800-227-2345. The help-line provides information on coping with cancer and locating resources, including financial assistance programs.
Transportation Resources
Connect-A-Ride
Connect-A-Ride is a free information and referral service that helps adults over 50 and adults with disabilities find transportation for medical services, errands, social activities and more. For more information, call 301-738-3252 (Montgomery County residents).
Call-N-Ride
Call-n-Ride is a subsidized taxi service program for low-income seniors (65 and older) and low-income persons with disabilities (aged 18-64) for Montgomery County residents. To apply, call 301-984-5409.
MetroAccess
MetroAccess is a shared-ride public transportation service for individuals in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area who are unable to use fixed-route public transit due to disability. For more information, call 202-962-2700.
Medicaid Cab
Medicaid Cab offers rides for Medicaid patients only. For more information, call 240-777-5899.
Mental Health/Emotional Support
- Grupo De Apoyo Para Latinas Con Cancer — to learn more and register, call 202-223-9100.
- Hope Connections for Cancer Support — offers free educational workshops, support groups, mind/body classes. For more information, call 301-634-7500.
- Montgomery County Crisis Center— The Crisis Center provides crisis services 24 hours a day/365 days a year over the telephone (240-777-4000) or in-person at 1301 Piccard Drive in Rockville (no appointment needed).
- EveryMind — provides individual and family counseling to increase self-esteem, improve relationships with family and friends, and develop positive coping skills. For more information, call 301-424-0656, ext. 520.
- The Affiliated Santé Group — provides services for individuals at risk for emotional distress. For more information call 301-572-6585. (Referrals can be submitted online.)
- Camp Kesem — operates free summer camps for children who have been impacted by a parent's cancer. Several chapters are in the Washington, D.C. area.
Prescription Assistance
- Maryland Prescription Assistance Program — provides a free discount prescription drug card coupon that can save Maryland residents up to 75 percent on prescription medication at more than 68,000 pharmacies across the country.
- RXAssist - Patient Assistance Program — offers a comprehensive database of patient assistance programs, as well as practical tools, news, and articles for health care professionals and patients.
- NeedyMeds — is an information resource dedicated to helping people locate assistance programs to help them afford their medications and other healthcare costs.
- GoodRx — is a medication price comparison website.
- RXResource - MedBank of Maryland — offers access to free prescription drugs for low-income, chronically ill Marylanders, from pharmaceutical manufacturers.
Safety Net/Public Assistance Programs
- Social Security Benefits (Social Security, Social Security Disability, Supplemental Security Income, Medicare). For services, call 1-800-772-1213.
- Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) — Find your state's toll-free number here.
- Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services — utility assistance, rental assistance, crisis counseling, public assistance programs, and more. Call 240-777-4450 for services.
- Food and Friends — Provide free home-delivered freshly prepared meals or home-delivered groceries for patients in active treatment; referrals come through a social worker or case manager. Call 202-269-2277 to learn more.
Employment-Related Resources
- Cancer and Careers empowers and educates people with cancer to thrive in their workplace, by providing expert advice, interactive tools, and educational events.
- Cancer Legal Resource Center provides information through its national telephone assistance line, outreach programs, and community activities to educate and to support cancer patients, their families, healthcare professionals, and advocates on matters like maintaining employment through treatment, accessing healthcare and government benefits, taking medical leave and estate planning.
- Patient Advocate Foundation provides direct services to patients with chronic, life-threatening, and debilitating diseases to help access care and treatment recommended by their doctor.
Cancer Foundations
- Leukemia and Lymphoma Society — invest in research to find a cure for blood cancers.
- Lung Cancer Alliance — empowers the community by helping people navigate the paths of early detection, diagnosis, and treatment.
- American Cancer Society— funds and conducts research, shares expert information, support patients, and spreads the word about prevention.
- The Red Devils — funds support services that improve the quality of life for breast cancer patients and their families.
