The Swallowing Center at Holy Cross Hospital provides a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to treating dysphagia — the medical term for difficulty swallowing. It is usually caused by muscle or nerve disease; however, it may also be caused by other problems including panic attacks or excessive gastric acid secretion.

Swallowing is a natural reflex that requires the coordination of more than 26 different muscles of the mouth, throat, vocal cords, and esophagus. The severity of dysphagia can range from mild, rare discomfort to a life-threatening disability. While dysphagia is a treatable disorder, serious problems may result. These problems include dehydration and malnourishment. Pneumonia may also develop.

The Swallowing Center at Holy Cross Hospital is comprised of a team of physicians, speech-language pathologists, nurses, dietitians, and technicians working together to meet the needs of the patient who has difficulty swallowing. Each patient referred to the Swallowing Center at Holy Cross Hospital will have an individualized treatment plan. Treatments can include specialized diets, education, and surgery. Our health care team will work with the patient and caregivers during follow-up visits to ensure optimal results.
