Psychological Aspects of Pain

Sometimes, even with the best medical care, pain does not go away. Persistent pain can take the joy out of living. Uncontrolled pain can stop a career or make daily responsibilities of home and family impossible to manage. A diagnosis of cancer can turn a family upside down. One of these by itself is enough to cause anyone to be depressed. Friends and family often become distant because they don't know what to say, or it becomes hard to watch you suffer.

These are all good reasons to enlist the help of someone with an impartial ear to help us sort things out or to just listen to fears, frustrations. Needing a mental health practitioner is nothing to be ashamed of, nor is it giving in. It doesn't have to be long-term. Stress wreaks havoc on chronic pain, even with appropriate management.

It is important to have all areas managed. If we suggest additional help, we are not suggesting your pain is not real. We're trying to be comprehensive in our care.
